Why Tees Valley?

Teesside has long been a powerhouse of British industry. Today, it is one of the UK’s most strategically connected industrial zones.

Teesside has long been a powerhouse of British industry. Today, it is one of the UK’s most strategically connected industrial zones and a growing hub for clean energy innovation, home to projects like BP’s hydrogen facility, large-scale battery storage, and the Dogger Bank wind farm.

The Plant

The £185 million refinery converts high-value lithium feedstock into battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate, the chemistry Europe's cell makers specify for high-performance EV batteries. Production starts at 25,000 tonnes per annum and scales across four trains to over 100,000 tonnes per annum: enough for 550,000 electric vehicles a year from Phase 1, and beyond 2 million at full capacity.

The Technology

Train 1 runs Veolia's commercially validated process technology: the same conventional route proven at commercial scale in operating refineries worldwide. No first-of-a-kind technology risk stands between us and first production.

The Economics

TVL combines some of the world's lowest projected capital and operating costs, independently confirmed through FEED as the lowest like-for-like capital cost in Europe. That is what gives Tier 1 customers competitively priced access to the European lithium market and a proven path to cut their dependency on China.

The Site

Our site at New Road, Billingham sits inside a chemical cluster with over a century of continuous process-industry operation. Steam, power, water, effluent treatment and pipeline corridors already exist; Teesport, one of the UK's deepest ports, is minutes away for feedstock in and product out; and the plant runs on 100% certified renewable electricity, with access to offshore wind at scale. Shared infrastructure is a large part of why our capital cost is the lowest in Europe.
